Our proud heritage.
1889
In 1889, The Master Steam Fitters Association of Washington, DC started, with just six members, formed an association of responsible contractors and employers of skilled craftsmen in the construction industry. That Association evolved into the current organization, MCAMW.
Today, The MCAMW plays a significant role in the advancement of the construction industry in the Washington DC Metropolitan region. A strong commitment on education and training remains at the forefront of our mission. The MCAMW remains dedicated to our members, working alongside our labor union partners, by advocating on legislative issues impacting our stakeholders, and building a thriving community for all.

Education & Training
A strong commitment to education and training has always been at the forefront of our mission. Through seminars, industry resources, and speakers, our membership stays informed and ahead.
Capital Contractors Institute (CCI) delivers “Best in Class” educational experiences through premier courses and programs, instructed by nationally recognized industry leaders. Our instructors have experience at all levels and areas of the industry, ranging from company principals to college professors and field leaders to business managers.
Legislative Advocacy
Throughout Maryland, Virginia, and the District of Columbia, the MCAMW is dedicated to improving and defending laws and regulations that affect our local members. Our focus is prevailing wage reform, worker misclassification and theft, prompt payment, and procurement.
The MCAMW, along with our Local Union Partners, have a proud history of joint advocacy: we actively campaign and advocate together on issues that promote and preserve our industry. To further the mission, the MCAMW established the Political Action Committee (PAC) in 2017 to support county and state legislators who align with legislative priorities that impact the welfare of the union mechanical industry.
The MCAMW is also an active member of the Alliance for Construction Excellence (ACE): a coalition of premier construction specialty contractor associations, allied to create awareness of the value of quality construction. The members of ACE represent over 1,200 specialty construction contractors employing more than 57,000 employees.
Labor Relations
MCAMW strives to maintain harmonious relations and collaboration with our local union partners.
We are proud to represent the most competent, professional, safety-conscious, and cutting-edge mechanical contractors in the nation. Our member firms combine the best project management talent in the industry with the highly skilled and trained workforce of Plumbers & Gasfitters Local Union 5 and Steamfitters Local Union 602.
Community Outreach
MCAMW has a responsibility to act professionally and ethically toward our membership, the community, and the environment. In collaboration with local government, industry trade associations, and our membership, MCAMW strives to create a community for our member contractors and associates to remain connected and strengthen business-to-business relationships. MCAMW has also connected numerous students with training and career opportunities in the mechanical, service, and plumbing trades.
Our members give back through hands-on service: partnering with Rebuilding Together DC · Alexandria to repair neighbors’ homes, sending union volunteers to keep elderly Prince George’s County residents warm through the winter with the Heat’s On, Water’s Off program, and supporting iThrive Worldwide’s holiday breakfast for foster care youth.
